FAQ: Will you work with an aggressive dog?
One question I’ve been asked quite a few times is if I will work with reactive or aggressive dogs. The answer is YES!
So often reactivity is a result of pain or past experiences that involved pain. When pet’s experience pain, their body gives them 3 options to react- fight, flight, or freeze. Due to the fact that dogs are predator’s in nature, they will most often choose to fight and lash out.
It’s always our goal to create a safe space for pets and their owners, even when we do have a reactive or aggressive dog. Here are some tips to handling and getting reactive dogs adjusted:
👉 reach out to me before you book! I will happily book extra time during your appointment so that we don’t have to rush and can take our time getting your dog acclimated
👉 help them associate our office with good things! I’m more than open to you doing a quick drop by with your pup for a treat and butt scratch during the hours we’re open, just give me a heads up so I can make sure no one else is here! Eventually, your pup will associate the office with fun and enjoy coming in, especially when they realize how good they feel after their appointment!
👉 work at home with muzzle training and hands on restraint. I can’t stress this one enough! So many pets hate the muzzle because it’s only associated with stressful situations like a vet visit. If you buy your own muzzle and practice at home with it, not only is your animal more comfortable with THEIR muzzle, but they don’t associate it with “bad” things happening. There are so many videos out there on how to correctly muzzle train! I do have muzzles at my office if needed, but bringing one your pet has worn before and is comfortable in is even better!
👉 Utilizing CBD, calming chews, essential oils, or pheromones before your visit. If you have found something that works to calm your dog, you’re more than welcome to bring it to their visit! I do have a pet safe essential oil blend as well as lots of treats here to use!
